$25,000 FOR CREATIVE PEOPLE

For the first time in Indonesia, on the 2nd October 2009 in Jakarta, 21 the Government gave awards to inventors and scientists in an effort to stimulate and reward creativity. The program which is a follow-up of the President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's instruction at the ministerial session and National Team of Intellectual Property Infringement Tackling in August 2008 is planned to be held annually.

The award category is divided into four categories: patent, science, copyright and creative industry. The Government targeted 50 awards to be given but there were only 12 winners among 141 participants. Among the 12 winners, 9 inventors received award in the patent category and 3 scientists received awards from the science category. Each winner received Rp. 250.000.000,- (US$ 25,000). The members of judges are appointed by the Government from the Ministries of Education, Justice and Human Rights (Directorate General of Intellectual Property), Agriculture, Research and Technology, Industry and Trade, and also Associations, Businessmen and Academician. The judgment is based on criteria set for each category.

The inventions that received awards, among others are: 1) A device to minimize gas consumption in gas stove by H. Syahrul, that can decrease gas consumption in regular gas stove to 18% while increasing its combustion mechanism to 68%; 2) A method to produce egg with high calcium content yet low in cholesterol content by Mimi Suratmi Praja; 3) Superior Papaya variety by Sriani Sujiprijati; 4) tomato hybrid variety by Sriani Sujiprijati and an ecology-political study on maritime and fishery in littoral area by Arief Satria.

Intellectual Property Rights are becoming central of the modern economy in the context of the global recession, climate change, and health and food security issues. Human creativity and inventiveness are expected to be able to find solutions for a sustainable future. The government's will in stimulating the creation and invention should be supported by all stakeholders to make sure that those creations and inventions are exploited for the good of people and trigger the creative culture urges among the nation such that will contribute to the growth of new industry and national competitiveness.
